Artificial Retina - Bionic Eye

A fundamental flaw with the design of the artificial retina system - the camera is headfixed. It should have a servo that mimics eye movements accounting for both saccades, the VOR, pursuit etc. I'm sure the subjects would have an easier time orienting - the are now learning a completely erroneous (re evolutionary normal) sensory signal that is incongruous with the active gaze.

Evolution as a Black Swan

It occurred to me that perhaps trying to explain the highly improbably case of our existence (owing to the confluence of improbable events that natural selection deals with) might be an unnecessary task. Unnecessary in the sense that the only reason we are trying to figure it out is because we exist - and we exist because we happen to be the outlier in the distribution of events in the universe. Aren't we just the lottery winner wondering "how could we be so lucky?" when in the end someone had to win the lottery...or rather - if someone won the lottery that someone would inevitably wonder about how lucky they are? I need to see if academics in the field discuss existence in this manner. I would assume Nassim Taleb does...but I haven't found it online. After all - the term "Black Swan" itself comes from an evolutionary example! People address Black Swans in evolution - but I'm not sure if they talk about it in terms of the sequence of all the evolutionary events leading to the present. Hmm - maybe I should actually see if people talk about it in terms of the primordial soup and the event of the first self-replicating substance being a Black Swan. I'm sure someone must.

Carole Kaye

Carole Kaye - her bass-work with the Beach Boys - directly affecting Paul's bass lines with the Beatles. But as she says below - it was still Brian Wilson's bass lines.

My theory on dogs

people have more empathy for dogs because of their ability to move each eyebrow individually. we project emotions on them and assume their motives are transparent while thinking the cat is plotting something....

fish highway

i first had this idea as a kid (using hamster highways as building blocks) - but figured i'd have to hook up a toilet like "flush" system to flush the fish into the highway - more elegant solution from the person who actually built it.

Ed Sullivan and the Beatles

Notes on first two appearances (Ed Sullivan Theatre and Miami Beach):
  • really feels like John is in the background compared to other three - although he is amused
  • seems like Paul sings lead on *every* song until second song (This Boy) in their second performance in Miami
  • Lots of crowd reactions to Ringo closeups
  • Great guitar work (and harmonizing) by George
  • Never knew Davy Jones appeared as a kid on first episode
  • In second show, although he pronounces it right in first show, Ed keeps referring to Miami as Miama
  • Mitzi Gaynor absoutely KILLS in her appearance on the second show. She is like a 1964 Madonna (attire, dancing, appeal, etc, except with a much stronger voice).

Elliott Smith

I was at this in store performance - C and I decided to stick around until the end even though we were late for a Buffalo Tom show at the Bowery Ballroom. When we finally got to the Bowery - we left after a few songs anyways. Still haven't found a live recording of the Dec 31, 1999 New Year's eve show we attended - Elliott rang in 2000. It exists as it is listed on trade sites.

8.09.2011

Couldn't (quickly) find research on why squinting deblurs an image (theories of restricting light on the periphery of the lens as well as actually changing lens shape are proposed but I didn't see any research proving these theories) - I've always wondered if it has something to do with edge-map alignment a-la-Marr....

TAL episode on patent trollshttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
I am going on the record as saying there should be an "Intellectual Ventures" style open source equivalent. I don't know where funding would come from to pay for the patents....but people should start contributing these frivolous patents into a common pool so that the software community can't be strongarmed by the likes of these big patent trolls who own the rights to similar frivolous patents.

Google broke its promise to me. It told me I would never need to delete another email using gmail. But over the last few months I have been constantly coming up to the limit and needing to delete emails....I finally caved and bought their first level surplus storage plan. It REALLY pains me - not because I think it's expensive or not worth it...but because Google made me change my emailing habits with a promise and now they broke that promise. I am going to start thinking of alternatives....I'm no longer exclusive Google.

i thought the 1992 episode of star trek the next generation "the outcast" was groundbreaking - no idea that it had been done in 1955 in playboy magazine by charles beaumont.
